Skin Camouflage
At Cathedral Dermatology, we offer advanced cosmetic dermatology treatments to help reduce the appearance of scars and stretchmarks and restore confidence. Our bespoke treatment plans, carefully discussed between patient and practitioner, are tailored to address your specific skin concerns, including scars, stretch marks, burns, and pigmentation loss. Two of our most popular non-invasive procedures—Camouflage Micropigmentation and Microneedling—are designed with care to improve the appearance of damaged skin, providing long-lasting and effective results, all with the aim of making you feel comfortable and confident in your skin.
What is Skin Camouflage?
Skin camouflage, or Camouflage Micropigmentation, is a specialised cosmetic technique that involves the application of natural pigments to the skin to conceal imperfections and restore confidence. The process is performed using fine microneedling cartridges that deposit pigment precisely into the dermis layer of the skin. The goal of camouflage micropigmentation is to mask areas where the natural skin pigment has been lost due to conditions such as vitiligo, scarring, burns, stretch marks, or surgical scars.
This technique can significantly reduce the visibility of skin imperfections by blending the treated areas with your natural skin tone, resulting in smoother, more even skin. The outcome is a more balanced complexion that boosts confidence and enhances overall appearance. Whether you are dealing with post-surgery scars or the effects of a skin condition, our expert practitioners can help you regain the flawless skin you deserve.

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a highly effective, non-invasive procedure that uses fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process and collagen production, which helps to improve skin texture, reduce scar tissue, and promote a more youthful appearance. Inkless Microneedling, in particular, is a version of this technique that does not use any ink or pigment but instead focuses on stimulating the skin’s natural repair mechanisms.

What conditions can be treated?
Treatable conditions with Skin Camouflage treatment
Vitiligo
Skin camouflage can help even out skin tone by blending hypo-pigmented areas with the surrounding skin. Specially formulated pigments are applied to create a natural look, reducing the contrast between affected and unaffected areas.
Scarring
Scars from injuries, acne, or other causes can be effectively concealed using skin camouflage. Pigments are matched to the individual’s skin tone to minimise the appearance of discolouration and create a smoother, more uniform look.
Burns
Burn scars often leave areas of discoloration or loss of pigmentation. Skin camouflage can restore a more natural skin tone by carefully layering pigments to match the surrounding skin, helping to reduce the visual impact of burn scars.
Stretch Marks
Stretch marks, which appear as streaks of lighter or darker skin, can be blended using skin camouflage techniques. This helps minimise their contrast against normal skin, making them less noticeable.
Surgical Scars
Post-surgical scars, including those from cosmetic or medical procedures, can be effectively concealed with skin camouflage. By customizing pigment application to match the skin, the scars become less visible, helping to restore confidence in the treated area.
Common Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions from microneedling patients just like you.
Who is a Good Candidate for Micropigmentation?
Micropigmentation is ideal for individuals who have lost pigment due to surgery, burns, accidents, or injury. It is also commonly used for patients undergoing surgical reconstruction. If you’re looking to reduce the appearance of scars or other skin imperfections, this treatment may be right for you.
What Happens at a Consultation?
During your consultation, our trained nurse will review your medical history and ensure a patch test is completed at least 24 hours before the treatment. This test ensures there are no adverse reactions to the pigment used. Together, the nurse and client will discuss the best course of treatment and select the appropriate colour to match your skin tone.
What is a Pigment Colour Patch Test?
Before your treatment, we perform a Pigment Colour Patch Test to ensure that the pigment matches your natural skin tone. A small amount of pigment is applied to the intended treatment site to observe how it settles over time. After approximately six weeks, we review the results and determine the ideal colour match for your skin. This ensures that the final result blends seamlessly with your natural skin for the best outcome.
Can I Have the Camouflage Treatment on My First Visit?
In some cases, camouflage treatment can be performed on the first visit, depending on the type and size of the scar. This initial session often involves a colourwash technique, where the pigment is gently blended into the skin. If the pigment is well-matched, a more permanent technique like Mosaic or Flek may be used for longer-lasting results.
What is the Aftercare Advice and Downtime Following Treatment?
After treatment, you will need to wear a gauze covering, which can be removed at home the same night. For 48 hours, avoid direct water or showering on the treated area. We recommend using Pure 4 Spray, which can be purchased at the time of treatment. This spray keeps the area clean, hydrated, and promotes healing with its antibacterial properties. Avoid tanning until the area is fully healed. Healing time varies, but it typically takes up to a week or longer depending on the treatment’s size and complexity.
Avoid rubbing or scratching the treated area, as this can interfere with the pigment and affect the outcome.
How Many Treatments Do I Require?
For microneedling without pigment, we recommend at least 3 sessions, spaced 6 weeks apart. If pigment is used, a review session is typically required after 4–6 weeks. Permanent colour techniques may require fewer touch-ups, with the results lasting longer depending on the individual. Your practitioner will assess your progress and recommend further treatments as needed.
