What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps. Presentations vary from patient to patient, so not everyone’s rosacea will look the same. It can often be mistaken for acne, eczema, or a skin allergy.
Prevention
The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it may be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Common triggers that can worsen rosacea include:
- Hot drinks and spicy foods
- Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
- Temperature extremes
- Sunlight or wind
- Emotions
- Exercise
- Cosmetic products
- Certain medications
Symptoms of rosacea
The appearance of this skin condition can vary but typically might involve:

- Visible blood vessels that some refer to as ‘thread veins’
- Swollen red bumps or pus filled spots
- Eye problems that might include swollen and inflamed lids, grittiness, red eye, tearing, dry eye
- Enlarged nose with altered texture and occasional ooze/discharge.
