What is Genital Skin Problems?
The genital, that is penile and vulval, skin can be affected by eczema and psoriasis like any other part of the body, however, might be more difficult to manage for many patients. Complicating factors can include, for example, infection, treatments spoiling underwear, allergy to topical therapies, incontinence and denial – our private parts are out of sight, so many patients get ‘fed-up’ and suffer in silence because nobody can see their skin problem.
Underlying conditions
Underlying conditions that can affect genital skin problems include:
- lichen sclerosus
- lichen planus
- hidradenitis suppurativa
- warts
- pigmentation referred to as ‘melanosis’
- precancerous lesions
- skin cancers
