What is a Blistering Disorder?

Fluid filled bubbles that appear on the skin are called ‘blisters’.  For the vast majority of patients these arise spontaneously following a trauma to the skin or sunburn and will settle themselves with gentle homecare and barrier creams and/or dressings.

Symptoms of contact dermatitis

For some patients, blisters can appear on the skin because of an underlying condition which might include:

  • A drug/medication allergy
  • Infections
  • Gluten intolerance
  • Immunobullous disorders whereby antibodies within the skin cause separation of the layers of the skin resulting in a blister
  • Rarer causes include porphyrias or pseudo-porphyrias
Skin Cancer
