What is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign tumor made up of soft, rubbery fat tissue that grows slowly under the skin. It is usually painless and movable, and can vary in size from small lumps to several inches in diameter. Typically found on the upper back, arms, or thighs, lipomas are generally harmless and do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic issues. When removal is needed, we can do this through a simple surgical procedure with a high success rate and minimal risk of recurrence.

Symptoms of a Lipoma

The symptoms of a lipoma can vary, but typically include:

  • Soft, Movable Lump: A lipoma typically feels soft and rubbery and can be moved slightly under the skin when pressed.

  • Localised Swelling: Although less common, a lipoma may cause localized swelling or a feeling of fullness in the area where it is located.

Treatment Options

If a lipoma is small, asymptomatic, and not affecting quality of life, it may simply be monitored over time without intervention.

The most common treatment for lipomas, especially if they are large, growing, or causing discomfort, is surgical excision. The lipoma is removed through a small incision, and the procedure usually has a high success rate with minimal risk of recurrence.
