Psoriasis Awareness Day 2025: Understanding This Common Autoimmune Condition

Psoriasis Awareness Day 2025: Understanding This Common Autoimmune Condition

Every year on 29th October, we observe Psoriasis Awareness Day to highlight this chronic autoimmune condition affecting over 1.8 million people in the UK – that’s roughly 1 in 50 people. At Cathedral Dermatology in Belfast, we believe understanding psoriasis is the first step towards better management and improved quality of life.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal, resulting in raised, red patches covered with silvery-white scales. It’s not contagious and can’t be caught from touching someone who has it.

Whilst psoriasis primarily affects the skin, it’s a systemic condition that affects the entire immune system. People with psoriasis have an increased risk of developing psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Common Symptoms to Look For

  • Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales
  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
  • Itching, burning, or soreness in affected areas
  • Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails
  • Swollen and stiff joints (psoriatic arthritis)

What Causes Psoriasis?

About 40% of people with psoriasis have a family history of the condition. Common triggers that can cause flare-ups include:

  • Stress and emotional anxiety
  • Infections (particularly strep throat)
  • Skin injuries (cuts, scrapes, sunburn)
  • Cold, damp weather typical in Northern Ireland
  • Certain medications
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption

Treatment Options at Cathedral Dermatology Belfast

Whilst there’s no cure for psoriasis, numerous effective treatments can manage symptoms. Our consultant dermatologists create personalised treatment plans tailored to your specific needs.

Topical Therapies

Your personalised treatment plan might include topical treatments, including moisturisers and medicated creams and ointments that reduce inflammation.

Oral Retinoids

For certain groups of patients, oral retinoids, can be used to control psoriasis. This treatment is particularly effective for specific types of psoriasis and is prescribed under careful dermatologist supervision.

Phototherapy and Advanced Treatments

For more severe cases, phototherapy or ‘light treatment’ works for some more stubborn cases of psoriasis. At the present time, however, phototherapy is not available at Cathedral Dermatology Clinic.

Injectable Medications and Specialist Referrals

Beyond these treatments, some severe cases require treatments including oral or injectable medications that control and suppress the immune system. These require pre-screening blood tests, close oversight, and regular review by a dermatologist of your skin and blood tests.

Living Well with Psoriasis

Daily management strategies can significantly reduce flare-ups:

  • Moisturise daily with thick, fragrance-free emollients
  • Take short, lukewarm showers
  • Use a humidifier during damp winter months
  • Manage stress through meditation or yoga
  • Maintain a healthy diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods
  • Stop smoking and limit alcohol
  • Protect skin from cold Northern Ireland weather

The Mental Health Impact

Psoriasis affects more than just the skin. Research by the Psoriasis Association UK found that 85% of people with psoriasis experience a negative impact on their quality of life. Mental health support is available through your GP, and organisations like the Psoriasis Association UK offer valuable resources and support.

When to See a Dermatologist

Consult a dermatologist if you experience:

  • Red, scaly patches that don’t improve with over-the-counter treatments
  • Psoriasis covering large body areas
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Symptoms affecting your daily life or mental health
